If that is so Relic is going to feel REALLY bad if he finds out. Perhaps physics function differently in the old universe. I am not sure I 100% buy the whole emotional energy as a finite resource. It makes him less an evil villain and more a frustrated anti hero. So now he is using the direct approach in order to save the current universe. He tried to save his universe, he tried talking and reasoning with people, but in the end everything he knew and loved was destroyed. It also serves to paint Relic in an interesting light(no pun intended). It was nice to have everything(mostly) laid out and confirmed. Most of this we already knew, either from reading the last few issues of New Grenadians and also from reading between the lines. Now that he has awoken he is determined to annihilate the various Lantern Corps to save our universe. For reasons still unknown Relic was remade and entombed rather than destroyed. Ever the scientist Relic watched and recorded as the Source Wall itself began to crumble and collapse. As the last Green Lightsmith died the universe itself began to collapse upon itself. First the Blue Converter(power Battery) went dark, soon after the remaining Lightsmiths went to War until they were all extinguished. Then an event known as the Dimming occured. He discovered the Source Wall, basically it is the edge of reality. The Lightsmiths did not believe him, so he went out looking for proof. Relic was a celebrated scientist that was studying the basis of the Lightsmith’s power and he theorized that the emotional spectrum was not some unlimited resource, but rather a finite reservoir. They wielded the power of the emotional spectrum via staves instead of rings, but had the same powers and abilities. They were the equivalent of the various Lantern Corps. In that universe there were being called Lightsmiths. This issue gives us the details.īasically there was a universe that existed before the current universe began with the big bang. We also knew that he has no love for Lanterns, whom he refers to as Lightsmiths. We already knew he was the last survivor of the universe that existed before this one. Since then we have learned a little about him since Kyle and the Templar Guardians awoke him. Relic first appeared in Green Lantern #21. So, we finally get to find out the truth behind Relic. But, DC has decided that this is not a reason to exclude their villains from Villains Month. They will instead be in Lights Out, which begins next month. Keeping with this trend I would not expect to see Hal, Kyle, John or Guy in Forever Evil. Likewise the Justice league was only barely in Rise of the Third army and left out of Wrath of the First Lantern. Simon was the only one involved in Trinity War, none of the Earth Lanterns were there for Rise of H’El, Throne of Atlantis or any other recent crossover. Basically they are off in space doing their own thing. Aside from Simon, most of the Lantern characters have not spent much time on Earth and when they do it’s brief and doesn’t involve other heroes. For about the last year they have been fairly isolated from the rest of the DC universe. The Green Lantern books are a unique entity in the New 52.
